Audubon Sanctuary

The Audubon Society of Portland is a tremendous resource.  In addition to tons of nature education events and classes for both children and adults, guided birding trips, their animal rescue center and their awesome bookstore, they also have a wonderful sanctuary.  It connects with Forest Park and Macleay Park.  Balch Creek winds through it, and a short trail connects to a stand of giant old-growth Douglas firs.  We stopped by recently to soak in some beauty.

Bybee the western painted turtle.  Bybee was found illegally for sale
in a pet store, cannot be released and will always have a home at their
wildlife care center.

I love taking the kiddos up there. The pond with all of the salamanders in it is always a favorite...
