If you are in the area, it's definitely fun to check out the public fossil beds in Fossil, OR. They are behind Wheeler High School on Main St. There is a kiosk which we found unmanned, so payment of $5 per person and borrowing of tools and goggles was on the honor system. It was a blazing hot day when we stopped by, so we didn't linger long, but right away found a few small fossils of leaves. Most fossils found here are likely to be plants from the Oligocene, 33 million years ago, and include lots of metasequoia or dawn redwood, Oregon's official state fossil. We all thought this was pretty neato!
