Every spring, the stunning Cecil and Molly Smith Garden in St. Paul is open to visitors, Saturdays and Sundays throughout April and May. We wouldn't miss a chance for a stroll through this hidden gem, now owned by the Portland chapter of the American Rhododendron Society (who also help maintain the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Portland). The garden is shaded by Douglas firs, much like the habitat Oregon's wild rhododendrons prefer. Their rhododendrons come in every imaginable color, and most are the size of small trees. When they bloom, the air is alive with the buzzing of bees and the hum of hummingbirds. The understory is planted with flowers, most of which are native wildflowers. Benches throughout the garden invite visitors to linger and soak in the beauty.
