Lava Canyon

Lava Canyon is a place where the power of Mt. St. Helens is starkly revealed. A river flows through ancient lava beds, through a landscape decimated once again by the lahar from the 1980 eruption. Lava Canyon can be explored in several different ways.  Visitors can stop by just for the viewpoints near the trailhead, take a short loop hike across a suspension bridge, or take one of several much longer hikes that originate here.  We took the short loop hike this time, which squeezes maximum beauty into a quick visit.

Twinflower.
Pearly everlasting.
