Artist Colleen Cavin was back at the Central Library to show folks young and old how to make simple chapbooks and concertina style books. Jasper is always making "books" using staples as binding, and I knew he'd be highly interested in a more professional looking binding.

The chapbooks were indeed simple, with single folds and two stitches in the center. The concertina books look quite fancy, but seem simple also once you've made one. Some basic instructions, with some wonderful variations, can be found here:
http://www.booklyn.org/education/accordion.pdf . Jasper loved these, and once we got home, he used one to write "Cacti", a "nonfiction book with facts about the different types of cacti". (Some of these are real and some are completely imaginary). He's using the one I made to write a book about caves.

We really appreciated Ms. Cavin's classes at the library. She seems very talented at streamlining artistic processes so that they can be done with ease by children and adults, with little cost and very professional results. I really hope they bring her back! She teaches at PCC (currently calligraphy classes) and reaches the younger set through
Young Audiences, which is a program to bring art instructors into classrooms.
