Black Raspberries

Black Raspberries, or Black Caps, have a short season, and right now they are peaking.  To me, they bring back happy memories of picking wild ones with my mother, and I was truly taken off guard to find them actually cultivated in Oregon.  Their wild cousins are a bit smaller, and more tart, but the cultivated ones are truly glorious.  They have a unique flavor that I love to eat fresh, and they are also wonderful for jam and ice cream.  Red raspberries are an old world fruit that the ancient Romans enjoyed.  Black raspberries instead are native to North America.   On a tip from fabulous unschooling mom Christine, we found them at West Union Gardens, which turned out to be another outstanding no-spray farm and a true paradise for berry lovers.  Jasper actually spent most of his time helping me pick, instead of finding various ways to goof off!
