Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

On a recent warm afternoon, we decided we had to explore a place with a pond to see what sort of amphibians we could find.  We went to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, and headed right for the tadpole pond.  There Jasper quickly found 18 Pacific chorus frogs!  We saw a few tiny tadpoles and quite a few egg masses.  Then we started looking nearby, peering all around and under logs, and found a couple of ensatinas, a carnivorous snail, lots of mollusk eggs (slug or snail), and some early wildflowers.  Here are some pictures.

Fun times! Interesting to see both green and brown chorus frogs in the same location. I've read that they can change color slowly as a result of changes in their environment. So are they turning from brown to green to match spring growth, or are they turning from green to brown because they've returned to the brown-bottomed pond for egg laying?

Beautiful! Now I'm hoping for non-snow weather so we can explore Oaks Bottom as well!
