Brenda's Rent-A-Chick

We rented baby chicks from awesome chicken farmer Brenda in Battle Ground, WA last spring, and Jasper was still talking about it.  So we definitely wanted to do it again!  Brenda charges only $25, with a $25 deposit, to care for them for one week.  She supplies everything you need, including a cardboard box for them to live in with an ingenious wooden lid, complete with an incandescent bulb to warm them. And Brenda is one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.  Caring for  the chicks is really easy.  The most work was changing their water several times a day, because they had a bad habit of filling the water bowl with pine shavings from their bedding.  Kids get a chance to care for these beautiful little creatures in less time than it takes for the novelty to wear off, and the chicks get very used to people.  We asked our homeschool group to come over and play with them, which is always a reliable hit!  This year we again got one of four different breeds; a Rhode Island red, a buff Orphington, a banded, and a white banded. The soft sound of their peeping charmed everyone. Jasper couldn't pick a favorite this time and wanted to pose for pictures with each of them.
