We went on a ramble around Lake Victoria at
Wapato Access Greenway on Sauvie Island. We expected to see water birds, but the lake was frozen over! The air was still filled with bird song, and we watched downy woodpeckers flitting about, geese flying overhead, and a majestic bald eagle. There is a trail map
here which makes it look quite impossible to get lost when circling the lake, but there are no trail markers and it's actually a bit confusing. We found that we were fine when using the sun and the lake as guides. In the summer, this may change, because the lake gradually dries up. Much of Sauvie Island's natural areas require
parking permits but this one does not. It's a lovely place to stop by if you are at Sauvie Island to pick berries or find a pumpkin and want a nature walk as well.
