We were in Albany recently and took some friends to see the
Albany Carousel. The workshop where volunteers are hand carving and painting these spectacular carousel animals is open to the public, and it's really not to be missed! It's going to be the best carousel in the whole entire universe, and you'll want to say you saw it being made! The sheer variety of critters that are being created for this carousel is staggering, and each one is unique and special. How on earth will anyone be able to pick their favorite when it comes time to ride them? When we visited before, there were only a handful of finished animals on display. Most were on display in the windows of local businesses, a fun way to promote the carousel and draw attention to these businesses as well. But on this visit, we found a large number of them on display at the shop. Their giraffe was just across the street in the window of a restaurant.

After the Albany Carousel, we headed to Salem to see
Salem's Riverfront Carousel. This is another hand-carved wooden carousel built by community volunteers. I'm guessing it was Albany's obvious inspiration. And it's really stunning!
