Dawson Creek

Canada geese and goslings.
Dawson Creek Business Park is just behind the Hillsboro Main Library.  You wouldn't think it would be all that interesting, but it is!  There are two big ponds right there, and a third just down a trail to the east.  Ducks, geese, nutria, and other interesting birds are always hanging around.  If you take a short trail headed south, you will pass by a stream where wapato grows.  Wapato was a very important dietary stable of native peoples, but is a bit unusual now.  A little further down the trail reveals many impressive snags, covered with thousands of small holes.  A colony of endangered acorn woodpeckers live here, ceaselessly filling these holes with acorns when they are in season, and retrieving them for eating all year long. Nearby grows western honeysuckle, and you will hear the sharp complaints of hummingbirds if you get too close.  The library itself is really impressive.  If you have a library card from Multnomah County of Clackamas County, you can get one here too, and anyone can come for their programs.
