What's better than a carnivorous plant? LOTS and LOTS of carnivorous plants, of course! Sarracenia Northwest is a carnivorous plant nursery in Eagle Creek, Oregon that brings their plants to the Saturday Market, does a lively mail order business, and a couple of times a year has an open house. Jasper had been literally counting the days until he could visit. He was completely captivated. He darted around, listening for the telltale buzz of insects hopelessly trapped inside elegant traps, and jumping for joy at the sight of exotic specimens he'd seen only in books. A very kind young man who works there, befriended Jasper and showed him all their marvels.
Sarracenia Northwest does have some tropical varieties, but they specialize in temperate varieties that like our kind of weather and do well outside in containers. They have pitcher plants, venus fly traps, butterworts, sundews, bladderworts and corkscrew plants, and even the elusive cobra lily, native to Oregon and Northern California. We were advised to come back again for a spring open house, when the nursery is alive with their many gorgeous blooms (which typically grow on very long stalks to keep their pollinators far from their traps).
