Jasper really wanted to celebrate Diwali this year. He's taking
Hindi classes from the amazing Reshma Basu (she offers classes for adults and kids of all ages), and she gave the kids the fun job of making some diyas. Diyas are little clay lamps that are traditionally placed outside homes at Diwali. Jasper loved making one diya and wanted to make more! We got some air dry clay, some fancy "jewels", and some little tea lights. Jasper set to work, and soon we had 20 little lights. They started out a fairly traditional shape, and quickly became more and more "artistic". Diyas are meant to cast light into the darkness, and they certainly do bring good cheer. Next year perhaps we will try using ghee and a cotton wick to light our diyas the usual way, instead of candles. But then, I'm afraid they would have to be a little less "artistic".
