A mom in our homeschool group recently invited the gang along for a ramble at the
Leach Botanical Garden. Jasper and I had been there before, but had somehow missed the extensive trails that wind along the banks of Johnson Creek. There are all sorts of places to explore. Above the manor house is a compost bin demonstration area. If you are thinking about getting a compost bin, this is a perfect place to check them out. They have several build-it-yourself bins, as well as many fancier bins, and helpful comparisons of the pros and cons of each. But for me the best thing about the Leach Botanical Garden is that it's a perfect place to run around in drizzly weather. There are lots of sheltering trees, and you can really see quite a lot without being deep in the woods when a deluge begins. It's fun for both toddlers that aren't ready for long hikes, and older kids that want to climb and jump. They offer preschool nature walks on Wednesdays from 10-11AM ($2 per child, no preregistration required). They are definitely one of Portland's hidden gems.
