Indian Heaven Wilderness is an area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest dotted with 175 lovely small lakes. We decided to explore here beginning at the
Thomas Lake Trail #111. This time of year, as the long dry summer is ending, we found many open meadows with scrubby vegetation which suggests that they are underwater for much of the wet season. Huckleberries are in season right now and are really abundant here. They look and taste much like blueberries, but are smaller and can have noticeably larger seeds. Jasper helped me pick some for muffins. We found lots and lots of Indian Pipe blooming, but instead of being ghostly white, we found red and yellow flowers. As we headed back, the rains were beginning, filling the sky with dramatic clouds.
