Lava Canyon
Lava Canyon is in good company. It's at Mt. St. Helens, a short distance from June Lake, the Ape Cave, and the Trail of Two Forests. There are several days' worth of easily explored unique natural beauty all in one spot. There is a short loop that will take you to see an incredible landscape shaped by the raw power of the volcano. The 1980 eruption caused a lahar (a very destructive flow of volcanic debris) which wiped the rocks clear of sediment and exposed much older lava beds. Beyond the loop is a longer out and back hike which makes a total of about 5 miles with a 1600' elevation gain. Much of this hike is very steep, and there is a long ladder to climb to complete it. We were well rewarded with stunning views. And we found mushrooms in abundance just beginning their fall show.
