Cape Horn Trail

The Cape Horn Trail was a lovely hike where we were treated to some beautiful forest and many stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge.  There is a new overlook which makes a great picnic area that just opened recently, the Nancy Russell Overlook.  We reached the overlook at a midpoint on the loop hike, but there is actually a parking area nearby so that non-hikers to enjoy it.  This hike is, remarkably, transit accessible.  But it took us much longer than we thought it would to complete the hike, so if you are depending on public transit to get home, you will have to plan it much more carefully than we did!  There are tunnels along the trail, and one that leads under busy Route 14 was not officially open.  It was not clear why, because it was certainly unobstructed and functional, and much safer to use than crossing the highway.  In the spring, a portion of the loop hike is closed to keep people away from nesting Peregrine falcons.  Details of the trail, the public transit, etc. can be found on the Cape Horn Conservancy website.
