Richard Ritchey, AKA "The Reptile Man", has an awesome reptile show. We caught it twice this summer, and Jasper was very impressed. His approach is to make it very interactive, selecting volunteer kids from the audience to participate in his demonstrations. Here are three things you should know.
- Rattlesnakes, which are the only venomous snakes in Oregon, will not chase you, so running away from them is a great idea.
- Richard Ritchy has a great little book, True Adventures of the Reptileman
, which contains some marvelous stories including the time his (devenomed) king cobra got loose in his car as he was driving down the highway on the way to a show. A family of four in the next lane thought he was about to die! This book will highly entertain young kids.
- His website has a complete list of his public appearances, most of which are free, so don't miss him!
