Lassen Volcanic National Park is kind of a hidden gem. It's tucked away in the state of
Jefferson, where it lurks, bubbling and steaming away. It's really beautiful. It last erupted in 1915, and people were there to take lots of interesting photos. Gigantic boulders that were hurled miles through the air were discovered while still hot to the touch. We took a couple of 3 mile hikes, to Kings Creek Falls, which offered some really stunning scenery, and Bumpass Hell, a major hydrothermal area which includes the Big Boiler, the hottest fumerole in the world, at 322 F. It's an unearthly landscape. We weren't at all familiar with this place, and just decided to see it as long as we were passing through. If you pass this way, don't miss it!
