Microscope Pictures

We have a Brock microscope which we love.  It was designed to be used by young kids, but has excellent optics. It comes with a lifetime guarantee that covers everything, is American made, and, best of all, has a fiber optic light gathering device in place of mirrors or light bulbs.  (Mirrors can be tricky to use, and light bulbs can get living specimens too hot and can be difficult to replace.  Sometimes a perfectly good microscope must be discarded because the manufacturer is out of business and the bulbs are no longer available.)  The Brock is really easy to use.  You can take it anywhere, even take the microscope itself off the stand. Of course I found out about it from a homeschool list.  Jasper often finds strange things to peer at through the microscope.  Every once in a while, we take pictures.  Here are some recent discoveries.
A daffodil petal.
The surface of a "wiggle picture".
The walls of a honeycomb.
A hyacinth petal.
An insect trapped in amber.
Lincoln on the penny.

Bert,
A family member got us a Moticam eyepiece camera: http://www.microscope-depot.com/cam_special.asp We have the lowest resolution, 1.3 megapixel, which has been just fine. If you have a live specimen, you can also film little movies with it. Microscope Depot often has used ones at discounts. I have seen great photos that people have taken through a microscope just using a regular digital camera. There's info on how to do it here: http://donnayoung.org/homeschooling/science/digital-images-microscope.htm#more-114 I did another post last year with more pictures and a couple of short movies: http://stagbeetlepower.blogspot.com/2011/01/brock-microscope.html

A microscope is very high on our homeschooling wishlist - we *must* get one this year. Great pics! What does it say about me, that when I saw that last one of Lincoln, for a second I thought it was Han Solo in carbonite, added as a joke! LOL
