This weekend we couldn't resist heading over to the Oregon Convention Center to check out the dueling Lunar New Year festivals. This year, both Tet, the Vietnamese Year of the Cat, and the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, began on February 3, and two separate celebrations were running together. In addition to the fun performances (mostly child dancers and acrobats in gorgeous costumes), and of course the tasty food, both celebrations turned out to be full of unexpected surprises.
There were the lovely ladies from the
Confucius Institute at PSU, where Chinese language classes are offered for 5th graders and older. They carefully translated Jasper's name into Chinese characters, to his delight. Then there was the booth filled with frog-shaped rasp instruments. They made a wonderful sound. Since the booth was constantly filled with happy children, it sounded very much like a really lively frog pond. Jasper brought one home, and now our house sounds like one too. The Tet festival had quite a few health education booths, where Jasper ran into a most unusual lady. He tried to steal her heart, but in the end decided to return it.
