Lately Jasper and I have been wandering around in
Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. We explored recently on our own, then came back on a different day with our homeschool group. It's a surprising place, because the streets of Sellwood rise above it so steeply that it's almost totally hidden from view. Yet it's actually quite a large park, with long trails to explore. The air was alive with the sounds of birds. This is one of the best places in the city to see birds, who love the marshy areas and the many lovely trees. A pond has been created specifically to attract amphibians. We are excited to see if we can find frog and salamander eggs there in the spring. The Springwater Corridor passes through it, making it quite popular with cyclists, but there are also many trails that do not accommodate bicycles. One end of the park connects to
Sellwood Park, which has one of the better playgrounds in the area, as well as a hugely popular outdoor swimming pool. This is the place to be if you need to add some bird song to your day!
