Artist Kathy Karbo can often be found leading inventive art activities at Multnomah County Libraries. We decided to check out one of her beeswax candle making classes, and it was marvelous! Making beeswax candles is pretty much self-explanatory. The wax is simply rolled around a wick. But Ms. Karbo made the class loads of fun, and encouraged the kids to really make their candles unique by cutting and rolling the wax sheets in different ways, and decorating them with pieces of differently colored wax. Her warmth and personality really made the class worthwhile. Natural beeswax of course smells wonderful. Beeswax is available locally at
Ruhl Bee Supply, and they can do will-call orders. This is lucky because beeswax sheets become very brittle in cold weather, making them tricky to ship for much of the year. Unfortunately, everyone including Ruhl's seems to have a minimum order which is prohibitive if you would like lots of colors. So be sure to go to one of her workshops!

I've been reading your blog since I stumbled upon it a few months ago. We moved to Oregon in June, and I've been really happy to find this blog, a good ongoing list of things to do. I homeschool my 6-year-old daughter, Topaz, and some of your posts make me wish I wasn't reading about these things past-tense...I need to know what fun stuff you guys are up to so we can do it too, instead of just see what fun thing we missed! Is there any way I could sync up with you? Is there a homeschoolers group I should know about? Anyway, thank you for putting this blog out there. It has been a great resource for us so far. I hope to hear from you!
