Today we took a ride on the Willamette Shore Trolley with a friend from our homeschool group, and followed it with a joyride on Portland's Aerial Tram. The vintage trolley runs in the summer between the South Waterfront and Lake Oswego, on a leisurely journey with many lovely views of the Willamette. It's $10 for adults and $6 for kids 3-12 for a round trip. If you leave from Portland, you will find yourself in Lake Oswego with about half an hour until departure. That's just enough time to head up the block to Tilamook Ice Creamery, where your ticket entitles you to a 10% discount. The trolley is operated in order to preserve the right of way for potential future street car use. It seems that is becoming more and more of a possibility, and some homes neighboring the tracks have hung up signs of protest. Yes, there are people who aren't in favor of more public transit! Of course, regular streetcars would probably mean the end of the historic trolley rides. More info on them can be found here:

If you haven't had a ride yet, once you figure out how to get down there to the South Waterfront, you may find yourself taking a quick exit off Route 5 when you see it any time you have time for it. The Portland streetcars head right to it. It's irresistible on a clear day, when the view is spectacular and 4 volcanoes can be seen. It goes from the South Waterfront up to Pill Hill and back. Riding down is free, but riding up is $4 per person over 6, and Trimet passes don't apply. It was built by a Swiss firm who must know a thing or two about mountain trams, and it's very space age!
