Jasper and I were passing through Eugene, and decided it was a great chance to visit the
Cascades Raptor Center. They have 60 raptors there that are unable to survive in the wild for a myriad of reasons. Like the Audubon Society of Portland, they are a place that provides emergency veterinary care to injured birds, with the goal of releasing them into the wild. When that is not possible, this is a place that many of them can call home. Signs give detailed information about each species, and tell a little about each individual bird and why it is unable to survive in the wild. Most birds have huge enclosures all to themselves, although they do have pairs of the same species occasionally living together. It's a fascinating place! As I was gazing up at an owl, Jasper was calling to me to come see what was just ahead- a magnificent bald eagle! They actually have four, and seeing these magnificent birds up close definitely makes your heart skip a beat. The sheer number and variety of raptors (which means all sorts of predatory birds who hunt with their feet) makes this place a must for anyone wanting to improve their bird identification skills, or gain a new appreciation of these graceful birds.
