Champoeg State Park has many excellent living history events throughout the year. Jasper loves to see blacksmiths at work, so we didn't want to miss this one. Have you ever seen these crazy hand saws in museums? Kids actually got a chance to use them! They were also given a chance to use woodworking tools which could be used to fashion smooth rods for chair legs, broom sticks, tool handles, etc., and also made cool curlicue wood shavings. And they were shown how to put the finishing touches on a nail. Exciting stuff! Champoeg has a lovely authentic 1860's garden, planted with useful plants for culinary, medicinal, and textile dying purposes. Jasper just loves their garden. He was excited to see their artichokes, which have gotten quite a bit larger than ours! Heirloom seeds, which are saved from the garden each fall, are available for sale for those who want to attempt the same results.
