The Hillsboro Main Library is fortuitously located right next to Dawson Creek Park, which can be surprisingly interesting for nature lovers. The third Monday of each month, Jackson Bottom Wetlands has nature programs for kids in 1st- 3rd grade that begin at the library and wind up outside on the paths. You can register for them through the l
ibrary's website. We attended one to learn more about birds, and Sarah Pinnock, Jackson Bottom Wetland's Education Specialist, lead the kids out to see where the acorn woodpeckers live. These birds like to eat acorns, and live together in oak forests, where they drill holes in snags for acorn storage. We wandered out past the lakes to see their home. The lakes have a wide array of ducks, lots of redwing blackbirds, and a couple of nutria shuffling along munching on the plants. The path leads past some western honeysuckle, where we could hear the chirps of unseen hummingbirds close by.
