We were at
OMSI for their Transit of Venus viewing earlier this month. It was pretty cool! There were lots of enthusiastic amateur astronomers from the
Rose City Astronomers and the
Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers sharing their telescopes to safely watch Venus pass in front of the sun. We had already obtained fancy solar viewing glasses, and the tiny dot that was Venus was plainly visible throughout the late afternoon and evening. Seeing it larger didn't increase the detail much, but it did make it more dramatic. You could see smaller, fuzzier dots that were sun spots. The huge crowd of enthusiastic viewers created a very festive atmosphere. I'm definitely inspired to come up with our own viewing device for the next solar event!
