I was searching for a place to order butterfly larvae for Jasper, and stumbled upon the website for
Wings of Wonder, an Oregon breeder of exotic butterflies. I had never heard of them before. I discovered that they had an exhibition greenhouse filled with butterflies that was open to the public. And we had just a couple days left to see it, because the owner was retiring! We dropped everything and went there. It was pretty magical. The greenhouse had 21 species of exotic butterflies flitting around, and was filled with the music of little twittering birds. A small pond filled with trickling water hid a few shy salamanders. At one end of the greenhouse was a room with snakes, lizards and toads. It must have occurred to them that as long as they were creating a warm, humid, tropical environment, they had ideal conditions for housing all sorts of other critters. We spent about an hour in the little greenhouse, admiring their little piece of paradise.
Fortunately, there is another place in the Pacific Northwest to see tropical butterflies up close, although it's not nearly as near to Portland- the
Pacific Science Center in Seattle.
