The
Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership is an amazing conservation group. One of the many things they do to advocate for the lower Columbia River estuary is to offer canoe rides on two giant canoes, so community members can see the beauty of these waterways firsthand. We joined them on one of their trips, winding down a slough on Sauvie Island that flows between the Columbia River and Sturgeon Lake. It was a perfect day for it. It was overcast, which kept the air somewhat cool, but not rainy. We glided along marveling at the peacefulness of the slough and the many birds going about their business. The most amazing part came on the way back, when we saw two river otters playing together. They were shy of us, and I couldn't get a picture, but we were thrilled at the sight of this elusive animal. Along the muddy banks of the slough were many large holes with telltale mud slides leading into the water. Our captain explained that these were the tunnels of beavers and river otters. The LCEP offers many cool environmental education programs to both school and homeschool groups in the Portland area.
