Didjuridus
Our homeschool group had a workshop with Portland musician Ed Drury, who told the kids all about the mysterious Australian instrument the didjeridu. It's an instrument that the Aborigines create from slender trees that have been hollowed out by termites, and it makes a really amazing buzzing sound that defies description. Mr. Drury played a couple of didjeridus for the kids, and explained exactly how they are played. Then the kids got to experiment with didjeridus made of pvc pipe, and decorated them. The pvc actually worked rather well to create a cool sound. It was marvelous to hear a large group of excited kids turning raspberries into music! We give Mr. Drury and his groovy workshops a big thumbs up! His workshop, and bazillions more, can be reserved through Young Audiences, an organization devoted to bringing the arts to schools. I have always found them wonderful to work with and more than happy to teach homeschoolers.
