Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge

Tundra swan.
We  had never been to Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge, and wanted to see what all the fuss is about.  This is a well loved birding destination.  So usually when I've seen pictures taken there, the pictures show only cool birds and not the landscape itself.  It turns out that it's an ideal one in many ways for birding.  A broad, flat meadow is crisscrossed with shallow, meandering streams.  Birds are much easier to spot than they would be in a thickly forested area, and many different kinds of birds are attracted to it.  There is also a large pond, and a creek surrounded by a line of tall trees.  What surprised me most was how very close it is to Portland.  So, check it out!

This duck was up to something...
American bittern.
Spike trisetum.
Cooper's hawk.
Marsh yellowcress.
Red-winged blackbird.
