Berry Joy

Black raspberries at West Union Gardens.
For me, it's not summer without berry picking. And every year, I share this summer ritual with my son. Black raspberries bring back memories of my childhood when black raspberries growing wild were part of every summer.  West Union Gardens has them (they call them 'black caps') and a huge variety of crops. They are a no-spray farm.
We never let a summer pass without a visit to Bonny Slope Blueberries. It's blueberry heaven!  The berries I picked this year are tart and sweet and sassy, and make the blueberries that inhabit grocery stores seem really bland. Bonny Slope is a mom and pop farm tucked into a back yard about 15 minutes from the heart of Beaverton. It's the very definition of a hidden gem!
